2005 02 17 - A trip to New

Mexico

On the 17 of February I took a plane to New Mexico. No more than a week and a half ago Marcela Melendez, former president of Hispanics for Life, invited me to her son's Birthday party. I was interested in assisting since there are 2 Unborn Jesus Adoration groups. Manuel Rodriguez called me about 3 years ago to establish the first Unborn Jesus Adoration group outside California. The group meets on Sundays at Our Lady of Belen in Belen, New Mexico, not too far away from Albuquerque. I met Marcela several years ago. Although originally from New Mexico, she lived in Los Angeles. She is a confident leader with a charismatic personality. I admire her way of searching the Pro-life leaders for advice and guidance. Also, her way on encouraging people on doing the right thing. As I contemplate the landscape formations from the airplane window, I wonder what does the Lord has prepared for me this weekend at New Mexico. Manuel picked me up at the Albuquerque airport. He drove me to Marcela's house. I was greatened by her and her husband Eddie. They kindly officered me a place in their country house.
There was a busy atmosphere at the Melendez house. There were making preparations for a Spanish party called "La Matanza" (the slaughter). The tradition goes back to ancient Spain. Where Celtic tribes slaughtered a pig in community and fed the whole clan. During the Islamic invasion of Spain, the Catholic Celts of Estremadura organized Matanzas in defiance of Islamic kosher rules of pig abstinence. This helped keep their identity while under occupation. During the Spanish colonization of America, the people of Estremadura colonized New Mexico. Cities and towns in New Mexico were named after cities and towns from Estremadura. Belen, Magdalena, Los Trujillos and even Albuquerque are just some examples. That weekend I was able to pray with the 2 Unborn Jesus prayer groups at our Lady of Belen. Manuel Rodriguez called me about 3 years ago to establish the first Unborn Jesus Adoration group outside California.
